Http Server Admin Console...anyone have it working ?

I have http server installed on Solaris. I can start the admin server.
However when I try the http://hostname:8008 I get the following error:
Not Found
The requested URL / was not found on this server.
When http://hostname:8008/wasadmin I get prompted with a username and password. Even though I updated the admin.passwd with username and passwd, I get the below error after entering the username/passwd.

My question are:
1)Is the adminconsole supposed to work providing me admin stuff for the http server ?
2)If yes to above then is it not working because I do not have it installed under /opt/IBM ... directory structure. I see errors in the admin_error.log

adminconsole for IHS 6.x cannot be accessed from browser. This adminconsole
works only with WebSphere Application Admin console once you have federated
the IHS as a node.

You are right the admin server is only for remote admin not for administering it locally.
